We watched Whale Rider at a small pre-screening in Austin, free admission, didn't really know what to expect. It turned out to be one of the best movies I've ever seen, and I immediately felt guilty about the free admission. I've literally thrown away money buying tickets to see mainstream movies (given that most mainstream movies are, in my opinion, somewhere between terrible and mediocre) to the point that I pretty much won't go to the theater to see movies anymore. Odds are, the latest hot-shot movie will be just another forgettable film that should never even make it to video. But occassionally we get movies like Whale Rider, and I wish I could take the hundreds of dollars I've wasted on Hollywood garbage through the years, and just write a huge fat check to the people who deserve it.
